The idea for {dvl}DB evolved over the space of about a year and from two distinct angles. On the one hand I have always been curious about some of the better software products I have used and PC games I have played and have always wondered who was involved in their creation and what other software they may have contributed to. On the other hand, as a senior software architect myself I am often called upon choose components for my software projects from the vast repository of open source and commercial offerings out there. In order to make better choices it would be useful to have an idea of which technologies fall under which projects and what the project team looks like, and how many other projects are using those technologies. Better information means better decision making.

Of course as the idea evolved if became obvious that with some careful design, incorporating wiki and forum features, we could create a verifiable personal record. A job candidate could point a recruiter and potential employer at their {dvl}DB page where that recruiter or employer would see a verified employment history and list of projects in which the candidate participated.

We are very excited about {dvl}DB and we hope that it will grow to become a useful resource for our industry. With that in mind we believe that registration and use of {dvl}DB should be free. Our featured company spot is paid advertising space, but is still within the spirit of the site, and will help us cover hosting and maintenance fees. So we encourage you to buy some time on our front page for your company (see our advertising link at the bottom of the page).

{dvl}DB is still BETA. We encourage you to try it and let us know if you find bugs and if you think we are missing any features. We are treating all data you enter as production data and will migrate all data into production when we are ready for our production release. So don't be afraid to enter your info, we respect the time you put into helping us make {dvl}DB cool.
